Match Report: County Hit Seven Past Linby

9 July 2016

Notts County started their pre-season in dominant fashion with a seven-nil victory over Linby CWFC at Rolls Royce Leisure in Hucknall.

In their first game under the guidance of new manager John Sheridan, the Magpies, made up of a mix of first team players, youth team players and trialists never looked troubled as they coasted to a comfortable victory over their Central Midlands Football League opposition.

Notts dominated play from the kick-off and had a number of chances before trialist Jordan Snodin saw his shot from the edge of the box deflect past the Linby keeper.

Adam Campbell made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute, beautifully bringing down a ball over the top. One-on-one, his first attempt was saved but he got a second bite of the cherry, with the ball trickling agonisingly over the line.

Ten minutes before half-time, Notts won a penalty following a foul in the box. Another trialist, Will Mellor-Blair, stepped up to take the kick converting low to the keeper’s left, taking Notts into the break with a three-goal lead.

The Magpies made three changes for the second half with Montel Gibson, Luther Wildin and Yohan Rutty Smith all joining the fray, followed later in the half by Haydn Hollis.

Libby started brightly, making a couple of half chances, before Mellor-Blair struck a stunning low shot from outside the box to make it 4-0.

Five minutes later it should have been five as Montel Gibson missed from a couple of yards.

In the 71st minute fans had another great goal to cheer with Jordan Richards hitting a great effort from outside the box.

A minute later, Linby should have had a consolation as they created a clear-cut chance, but saw their shot rebound off of the upright. The ball quickly went down the other end of the field, with Gibson twisting in the box to find space and finish cooly into the corner.

10 minutes from the end, Notts made it seven with Mellor-Blair finishing clinically to complete his hat-trick.

Team: Loach, Richards, J Dhillon, J Snodin, Basi, Puji, Atkinson, McMillan, Mellors-Blair, Campbell, Sharpe. Subs: Hollis, Rutty-Smith, Wildin, Gibson
